Many leadership roles require someone who can be in the position for a long time, someone that can grow as the organization grows, and change as the organization changes. This is why transitioning can be difficult. If you just thrust a new leader into the system without properly training them, it could hurt both them and the organization long-term.

Succession planning is key in making sure this doesn’t happen, but for one reason or another, the organization may not be ready with a plan or a trained individual to take over. In these times, an interim leader has to be brought in from outside of the organization.

Interim leaders are crucial in an unplanned succession because they have experience with other organizations in the same scenario as you. They know how to overcome common obstacles, and more importantly, how to get your organization ready for the next leader to make that transition as seamless as possible.

Interim leaders are much more temporary than normal leaders. Oftentimes they don’t receive much recognition but the work they do in their role is invaluable. Without them, the organization would experience far less growth and possibly even fizzle out. If your organization fails to plan for succession effectively, you need an interim leader.
